Of course, Salem is perhaps most renowned for the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. This dark chapter saw the unjust trials and executions of 20 individuals accused of witchcraft. While a tragic piece of the town's past, the Witch Trial legacy lives on through attractions like the Salem Witch Museum that explore this tumultuous period.
Beyond witches, Salem's maritime roots run deep. Federalist architecture from its ship-building heyday is evident everywhere you look downtown. You can easily imagine the old sea captains' wives walking those same cobblestone streets we stroll today.

The Peabody Essex Museum
Let's start with one of the most breathtaking venue options - the renowned Peabody Essex Museum (PEM). As the oldest continuously operating museum in the country, PEM provides an extraordinary combination of contemporary architecture and historic elegance for your celebration.
I always love filming weddings in the show-stopping Atrium with its towering glass ceilings and striking modern design. The light in this space is simply stunning. Couples can also opt for a classic New England feel in the 1820s-era East India Marine Hall. With its warm wood tones and historic maritime decor, it exudes timeless romance.

Hamilton Hall
For a truly Old World fairy tale setting, it's hard to top Hamilton Hall. This Georgian mansion straight out of the 18th century boasts incredible period details like a curved grand staircase, gilded mirrors, and an Italian chandelier. The famous sprung ballroom dance floor instantly transports you to another era of elegance.
I can vividly picture the regal wedding reels I've captured here of brides floating across that historic dance floor in gowns befitting the lavish ambiance. It's a videographer's dream shooting in such a cinematic, romantic space dripping with character and history.

Olio
In stark contrast to Hamilton Hall is the blank canvas venue of Olio. Opened in 2019, this modern and versatile space offers a crisp, minimalist aesthetic that lets you create any wedding vibe you desire.
I love the creative freedom couples have at Olio to stage their dream celebration through unique decor, furniture rentals, lighting looks, etc. As a videographer, it's a thrill to capture the distinctive style and personalized flair couples infuse here. From bohemian garden vibes to formal modern glamour, the artistic possibilities are endless in this open, customizable space.

Old Town Hall

In this two-floor layout, you can host your ceremony upstairs in the elegant Great Hall, then move downstairs to the Colonnade ballroom for your reception dinner and dance. With the indoor downtown location, you also avoid weather worries. As a videographer, this venue's combination of incredible historic bones and versatile event spaces creates endless opportunities for breathtaking footage.

Salem Waterfront Hotel & Suites
For oceanfront "I dos" with sweeping harbor views, the Salem Waterfront Hotel is tough to beat. I've captured some of my most remarkable shots at this picturesque property. There's nothing quite like a waterfront ceremony backdrop of glistening boats bobbing along the New England coastline.
After your dreamy maritime vows, celebrations move into the modern Maritime Ballroom designed for elegant receptions of up to 300 guests. As a videographer, I relish the juxtaposition of filming couples' first dance in this sophisticated space, then heading outside later for magical golden hour portraits with the harbor behind them.

Travel
By Air
For those flying in, Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) is the closest major airport, located about 25 miles from downtown Salem. There are several options for reaching Salem from the airport:
Rental Car - This is the most convenient option for groups. All the major rental car companies have facilities located at Logan. It's an easy 30-40 minute drive to Salem via the Callahan Tunnel and highways.
Town Car/Limo Service - Many hotels in Salem offer affordable town car or limo transportation from Logan Airport. This private service provides a seamless transition from the airport to your hotel.
Public Transportation - The MBTA offers combined rail/bus service from Logan Airport to Salem via the Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail line. This affordable option takes around 1 hour 15 mins.
Salem Ferry - The Salem Ferry runs a seasonal route directly between Salem's Blaney Street Terminal and Boston's Long Wharf/Central Wharf area near the New England Aquarium. It's about a 50 minute ride across the harbor. The ferry operates daily service from late May through October, with more limited weekend-only service in April, November and December. Typical hours are approximately 8am to 8pm, with later evening ferries on weekends. One-way adult fares are $20-25.
By Train
Salem itself does not have direct Amtrak rail service. However, Boston's North Station is about 30 minutes away and accessible via the MBTA commuter rail. From North Station, you can take the Newburyport/Rockport line directly into downtown Salem.
Some couples have had wedding guests take Amtrak into Boston first, then complete the final leg up to Salem via the MBTA commuter rail.
By Car/Bus
For those within driving distance, Salem has easy access right off of I-95 (Route 128) and I-93. Route 107 becomes North St and runs directly into downtown Salem.
If driving from outer distances like New York City (~4.5 hours), D.C. (~8 hours), Portland, ME (~1 hour) etc., there are options like private rental cars, carpooling, rideshares or even bus services like Peter Pan Bus Lines.
Getting Around Town
Once in Salem, many wedding activities and hotels are located compactly within the walkable, historic downtown area and waterfront district. For those not staying downtown, rideshare services provide easy transportation.
The Salem Trolley - this vintage trolley offers a seasonal hop-on, hop-off service looping around all the major wedding venues and tourist areas for an affordable fare.
Overall, the accessibility of Salem combined with its relatively small, contained downtown area makes it very convenient for visitors attending weddings in this charming New England town.

As mentioned, this upscale hotel right on Salem Harbor is a top choice for hosting weddings as well as guest room blocks. It offers four room types - traditional double queens, king rooms, whirlpool suites, and apartment-style presidential suites. Amenities include an indoor pool, fitness center, and waterfront views.
The Merchant
This AAA Four Diamond luxury hotel in downtown Salem receives rave reviews from wedding guests. The Merchant boasts modern, sophisticated decor and rooms across its three heritage buildings. There's an on-site restaurant/bar and unique perks like personal concierge services.
Hawthorne Hotel
For a historic inn experience, the Hawthorne Hotel dating back to 1925 provides classic New England charm. This boutique hotel has uniquely decorated guest rooms, many with fireplaces. The parlor areas exude cozy bed & breakfast vibes.
Salem Inn
Another quaint option, the Salem Inn gives guests the choice of rooms in the main 1834 inn or carriage house building across the street. It's located right in the heart of downtown near restaurants and attractions.
