WEDDING PLANNING CHECKLIST

Hello, I'm Adam Gorham, a wedding videographer based in the beautiful state of Rhode Island. As someone who has filmed countless weddings, I can confidently say that Portsmouth is one of the most charming and picturesque places to tie the knot. Nestled on the shores of Narragansett Bay, this quaint town offers a blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and modern amenities that make it an ideal wedding destination. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about getting married in Portsmouth, from travel tips to venue recommendations, and even a handy checklist to ensure your big day goes off without a hitch.

About Portsmouth

A Quaint Coastal Gem

Portsmouth, established in 1638, is the second oldest town in Rhode Island. Its rich history is evident in its well-preserved colonial architecture and historic landmarks. The town is surrounded by water on three sides, offering stunning views of Narragansett Bay and the Sakonnet River. Whether you're a history buff or a nature lover, Portsmouth has something to offer everyone.

Attractions and Activities

While you're here, take some time to explore the local attractions. The Green Animals Topiary Garden is a must-visit, featuring over 80 topiary sculptures and beautiful gardens. If you're into sailing, the New England Boatworks and the Aquidneck Club offer excellent facilities and opportunities to get out on the water. And don’t forget to visit the local wineries and vineyards, like Greenvale Vineyards, for a relaxing day of wine tasting.

Tips for a Smooth Journey

Book Early

Whether you’re flying, renting a car, or booking accommodations, make your reservations early, especially if your wedding date falls during the peak travel seasons (summer and fall).

Check Traffic Conditions

If you’re driving, check the traffic conditions and plan your route accordingly. Apps like Waze or Google Maps can provide real-time traffic updates and suggest the fastest routes.

Pack for the Weather

New England weather can be unpredictable, so pack accordingly. Bring layers, a light jacket, and an umbrella, just in case.

Allow Extra Time

Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination, especially if you’re traveling on a holiday weekend or during peak tourist season. Allowing extra time will help reduce stress and ensure you arrive relaxed and ready to enjoy your wedding festivities.

By considering these travel tips and options, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to Portsmouth. Whether you’re flying, driving, or taking public transportation, Portsmouth’s scenic beauty and charming atmosphere await you.

Wedding Permits and Legalities

If either party has been previously married, you'll need to provide divorce decrees or death certificates of the previous spouse. The fee for a marriage license in Rhode Island is around $24.

Each season offers unique advantages and challenges, so understanding these can help you choose the best time of year for your wedding. Let’s delve deeper into what you can expect during each season in Portsmouth.

Spring

Weather

Spring in Portsmouth is a time of renewal, with temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to the mid-60s Fahrenheit (7-18°C). The weather can be unpredictable, with occasional rain showers, so having a backup plan for outdoor events is crucial.

Mild Temperatures

The weather is generally mild, making it comfortable for guests to enjoy both indoor and outdoor festivities.

Off-Peak Season

Spring is not as busy as summer, which can mean more availability and potentially lower prices for venues and vendors.

Considerations

Weather Variability

Be prepared for possible rain and fluctuating temperatures. Renting a tent or having an indoor backup plan can help mitigate weather-related issues.

Allergies

Springtime allergens can be problematic for some guests. Consider this when choosing flowers and outdoor settings.

Summer

Weather

Summer in Portsmouth is warm and inviting, with temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit (18-29°C). It’s the peak season for weddings, thanks to the sunny weather and long days.

Advantages

Reliably Warm Weather

Extended Daylight

Longer days mean more time for outdoor events and photography.

Lush Scenery

The landscapes are vibrant and full of life, providing stunning settings for your wedding.

Considerations

Higher Costs

Due to the popularity of summer weddings, venues and vendors can be more expensive and book up quickly. Early planning and booking are essential.

Heat Management

Ensure your venue provides shade and plenty of hydration options for guests. Consider a later ceremony time to avoid the peak heat of the day.

Tourist Season

Summer is also the peak tourist season, so accommodations and local attractions may be busier. Block hotel rooms for your guests well in advance.

Fall
